Image Requirements Checklist

On This Page

Amazon does not give you a warning before suppressing your listing. You log into Seller Central and discover your main ASIN has been dropped from search results, your Featured Offer (Buy Box) is gone, and a generic alert reads: "Main image does not meet Amazon standards."

Because Seller Support often takes days or weeks to review image cases, listing image suppression can easily cost thousands of dollars in lost organic sales and wasted PPC momentum.

Almost every image suppression stems from a handful of strict, non-negotiable standards that are easy to break—especially when working with external freelancers or editing images across multiple catalog updates.

Here is the checklist of what Amazon checks in 2026, across main images, secondary images, and technical file standards.

1. Main Search Image (Slot 1) Requirements

The main image is held to the strictest rules on the marketplace because it is the image shoppers see in search results.

Requirement Strict Rule What Gets Suppressed
Background Color Pure White (RGB 255, 255, 255 / #FFFFFF) Off-white (RGB 254,254,254), grey gradients, studio drop-shadows
Product Fill Ratio Product must occupy at least 85% of the canvas Excessive border whitespace, product pushed into a corner
Props & Packaging Only the exact item(s) included in the purchase Staging props (e.g. coffee beans next to a grinder, phone inside a mount)
Overlays & Badges Zero text, zero graphics, zero borders Star rating badges, 'Best Seller', Amazon logos, warranty seals
Photography Type A professional photo of the actual product Drawings, illustrations, and mockups
Packaging Display Product must be shown outside its packaging Cardboard boxes or polybags covering the product (unless packaging is the product)

The RGB 254 Trap: A background that looks completely white to the human eye on an uncalibrated monitor can still get flagged, because Amazon checks pixel values, not how the image looks on your screen. Edge pixels at 254 are a common culprit. Run your main image through Compliance Guard to verify raw pixel values before uploading.

2. Secondary Images (Slots 2 through 7)

Secondary image slots have significantly more creative latitude for infographics, dimension charts, and lifestyle scenes. However, they are not exempt from Amazon policy:

  1. Text Relevancy: Infographics are encouraged to explain features and sizing, but images that consist entirely of dense text paragraphs with a tiny product thumbnail will be flagged for poor customer experience. Keep text focused on concise benefit callouts.
  2. Competitor Naming: You cannot name competitor brands (e.g. "Better than Brand X") or display competitor ASINs in comparison charts. Comparisons must refer to generic alternatives (e.g., "Standard Plastic Cutters vs. Our Hardened Steel").
  3. Substantiated Claims: Any claim printed on an infographic—such as "Clinically Proven," "Food Grade BPA-Free," or "Doctor Recommended"—must be substantiated in your listing attributes or bullet points.
  4. No Customer Reviews or Amazon Badges: You cannot superimpose customer review star ratings, seller feedback quotes, or fake Amazon Choice badges onto secondary images.

3. Technical File & Resolution Specifications

Failing technical specs will either block your upload in Seller Central or quietly disable key conversion features:

  • Resolution: At least 1,000 pixels on the longest side, which is what enables zoom. Recommended: 1,600 to 2,000 px for sharp zoom. Maximum 10,000 px on the longest side.
  • File Format: JPEG (.jpg or .jpeg), PNG, GIF, or TIFF. Amazon accepts RGB or CMYK; a high-quality sRGB JPEG is the safest default.
  • File Size: Maximum 10 MB per image.
  • Aspect Ratio: 1:1 (Square) is standard across most categories; apparel categories sometimes prefer 2:3 or 3:4 portrait ratios.

4. How to Fix a Suppressed Listing Image

If your ASIN has already been flagged:

  1. In Seller Central, go to Inventory > Manage All Inventory and filter for suppressed listings (or open the Fix Your Products page).
  2. Review the specific reason Amazon gives for the suppression.
  3. If the rejection cites an off-white background, do not try to manually erase shadows in Photoshop. Generate a clean cutout using nozam's listing image generator to ensure pixel-perfect RGB 255 clamping.
  4. Upload the replacement file. Image updates aren't instant, so give it a few hours before assuming the upload failed.

For studio-grade images without manual editing errors, see nozam's Amazon product photography, or check your whole image set with Compliance Guard before you upload.

Put It Into Practice

Build the assets, not just the plan.

Nozam generates listing images, A+ modules, and ad creative from one product photo - sized to Amazon’s specs and checked by Compliance Guard before you export.
